Tech4Kids: Your own wooden lamp dog

A dog that lights up and is self-made: In the Tech4Kids workshop at FabLab Bayreuth, a personal desk lamp made of wood will be created step by step. Children and teenagers will discover craftsmanship techniques, experience visible learning progress, and take home a functional family experience in the end.

Sawing, drilling, and sanding with your own hands

In the woodworking shop, there will be sawing, drilling, filing, sanding, gluing, and screwing. From many individual plywood pieces, a friendly lamp dog grows gradually. The head and legs remain movable, so the dog can later assume different sitting and standing positions. The direction of the light can also be adjusted accordingly.

Discovering technology in a child-friendly way

The workshop combines creative building with an age-appropriate learning experience. Participants will learn how lamp socket, switch, and connection cable interact. The connection cable with switch and E14 socket is already prepared for operation. Dangerous electrical work is eliminated, while the safe handling of tools is the focus.

Learning fun, self-confidence, and a personal project

Practical work strengthens fine motor skills, spatial thinking, concentration, and endurance. Each step of the work visibly shows developmental progress: measuring, connecting, securing, and designing leads to a real result. No prior knowledge is required. The material is provided. Clothing that can get dirty is included, along with joy in making things yourself.

Important information for families

The workshop is aimed at children aged 12 and up. Younger children need an adult companion, such as a grandparent. The number of participants is limited to six people. FabLab Bayreuth sees itself as an open high-tech workshop in Upper Franconia and aims to provide people with easy access to technology and practical learning.

Conclusion: A glowing souvenir to take home

This family experience combines children's laughter, curiosity, and craftsmanship experience. Instead of just watching, participants build their own movable lamp dog and see how wood, tools, and patience come together to create a personal favorite piece. Those who experience Tech4Kids live take home not only a lamp but also pride in their own skills.
