French-English Advent Splendor in the Bayreuth Castle Church
When the first days of Advent arrive, the Catholic Castle Church Bayreuth transforms into a special sound space: The choir of the Castle Church and the Young Vocal Ensemble present a festive Advent concert under the direction of Sebastian Ruf. On Saturday, November 28, 2026, a colorful program featuring French sacred music and British Christmas traditions will be heard.
Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio as the Musical Centerpiece
At the center is Camille Saint-Saëns’ festive Oratorio de Noël. The work combines choral warmth, soloistic lines, and a finely nuanced orchestral sound language. String orchestra, harp, and organ expand the choral sound into a festive musical panorama, alternating between intimate moments and majestic crescendos.
British Christmas Classics with Luminous Sound Colors
The program is complemented by Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols as well as selected works from Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. The combination of French oratorio tradition and British choral music creates an exciting contrast: warm strings, ethereal harp sounds, clear voices, and the resonant support of the organ come together.
Choir, Soloists, and Orchestra under Sebastian Ruf
The musical direction is taken by regional cantor Sebastian Ruf, who has been responsible for church music at the Castle Church Bayreuth since February 2021. Together with the choir of the Castle Church, the Young Vocal Ensemble, a string orchestra, harp, and organ, Hanna Schmidt-Ott, Lieselotte Fink, Oliver Kringel, and Daniel Weiler shape the concert evening as soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.
A Concert Experience with Advent Atmosphere
The acoustics of the church space allow the voices to flourish and make the musical synchronization between choir, soloists, and instrumental ensemble immediately palpable. Under the direction of Sebastian Ruf, precise orchestration and a festive stage performance meet the concentrated audience atmosphere of a pre-Christmas church concert.
Conclusion: Musically Beginning the Advent Season
The Advent concert in the Castle Church Bayreuth promises an atmospheric evening with great choral music, selected soloists, and a varied French-English program. Anyone wishing to start the Advent season with impressive voices, warm string colors, and sacred splendor will experience a concert with a special live atmosphere here.
