With wood, tools, and children's laughter to a bird feeder

How do individual wooden boards and strips become a real feeding station for birds? In the Tech4Kids workshop at FabLab Bayreuth, children aged 12 and above discover the world of woodworking and build their own bird feeder step by step.

Doing it themselves instead of just watching

Sawing, drilling, filing, sanding, gluing, and screwing: In this family experience, practical experimentation is at the forefront. Participants work with typical tools from the woodworking shop and experience directly how a digital template and various wooden parts come together to create a high-quality workpiece.

Age-appropriate learning with a real workpiece

The workshop is aimed at children and young people aged 12 and above. No prior knowledge is required. Step by step, young inventors learn the basics of woodworking, develop practical skills, and enhance their concentration, accuracy, and problem-solving abilities. This learning experience combines technology, creativity, and nature observation in a child-friendly way.

Safety and shared learning fun

An important part of the workshop is the safe handling of saws, drills, files, sandpaper, and screwdrivers. The children gain insights into basic safety rules and carry out the work steps in a guided and structured manner. Work clothing that may get dirty is part of the equipment for an active workshop day.

A home for garden birds

The finished bird feeder has a practical food silo with a liftable lid. After the workshop, the self-designed workpiece can be taken home. It can be mounted on a wall or tree, filled with birdseed, and used as a starting point for exciting observations in the garden or on the balcony.

Conclusion: Discovering technology and experiencing nature

This Tech4Kids offering gives children successful experiences, fun learning, and shared time in an open high-tech workshop. Those who enjoy tinkering, working with their hands, and proudly taking home their own workpiece will experience a varied workshop with real added value in Bayreuth.
